Locked out of your car in Altea?
It happens in the same handful of places every summer. The car park behind the seafront, the roadside above a cove, the space you finally found up a side street when the town was full. Boot open, bag in, door shut, keys inside.
Nothing about the situation is urgent in a dangerous sense, unless somebody or an animal is inside the vehicle, in which case call 112 before you call anybody else. Otherwise the job is simple: get the door open, get your keys back.
Keys locked inside the vehicle
Modern central locking makes this easier to do by accident than it used to be. A boot lid closed with the fob inside, a door locked by a button pressed on the way out, a car that locks itself after a few seconds.
None of that changes the job. The door is opened, you take your keys out, and you drive away with the car exactly as it was.
Non-destructive car door opening
The point of the tools is that the vehicle should look no different afterwards.
Door openings are done with air wedges and long-reach tools that work through the gap at the top of the door, with the frame protected while the tool is in place. On most vehicles it is a matter of minutes.
Where a vehicle cannot be opened this way, we stop and tell you. A locksmith who insists every car opens in five minutes is a locksmith who has not yet met the one that does not.
What we check before starting

Documentation is asked for every time: the registration document, the rental agreement, or identification matching the paperwork in the car.
Rental car lockout assistance
Hire cars from Alicante airport end up parked all over Altea, and locking the keys inside one is a bad start to a week off.
Call the rental company first. Your agreement almost certainly includes assistance, and many companies will not accept work carried out on their vehicle without authorisation. Once they have agreed, we can attend and open the door.
Vehicles we can usually open
Ordinary cars, vans and campers, private or hired, of most makes and ages. The deciding factor is the door and its locking system, not the badge on the bonnet.
We do not work on motorcycles, and we do not touch ignitions, immobilisers or anything electronic inside the vehicle. If the problem is that the car will not start rather than that it will not open, it is not a job for a locksmith at all.

Car opening prices
The price depends on the vehicle, where it is parked and the time of day. It is quoted on the phone before anyone sets off, and it does not change once we arrive unless the vehicle turns out to be different from the one described.

Can every car be opened without damage?
Most can. Some cannot, and we would rather say so than start and hope. Certain models, and any vehicle with a door that has already been tampered with, carry a real risk of damage. Where that is the case you are told before anything is touched, and you decide whether to go ahead or call the manufacturer assistance line.
My hire car has the keys locked inside. Who do I call first?
The rental company. Most rental agreements say the vehicle may not be worked on without their authorisation, and many include roadside assistance you have already paid for. Call them, then call us if they want an independent locksmith to attend.
The car is in an underground car park. Is that a problem?
No, as long as we can reach it on foot and there is somewhere to stand beside the door. Tell us the car park, the level and the bay number when you call. Parking in Altea in August is its own adventure, so clear directions genuinely save time.
How much is a car opening?
It depends on the vehicle and the time of day, and it is quoted before anyone travels.
A child is locked in the car. What should I do?
Call the emergency services on 112 first. A child or an animal shut in a vehicle in the sun is a medical emergency and takes priority over the door. Call us afterwards if the vehicle still needs opening.
