You can see them. They are on the passenger seat, or in the boot under a beach bag, and every door is locked.
First, the only real emergency
If a child, an elderly person or an animal is inside the vehicle, call 112 immediately. In summer here, the inside of a parked car reaches dangerous temperatures within minutes. That is a medical call, not a locksmith call, and nobody will think you overreacted.
Everything below assumes the car is empty.
Sixty seconds of checks
- Try every door, and the boot. People lock the driver’s door from habit and leave the passenger side open.
- Check the spare key. Not “is it at home” but “who can bring it”. A partner twenty minutes away is cheaper than any call-out.
- Look for a phone app. Several manufacturers allow the doors to be unlocked from an app if the car is connected and the account is set up.
- Check your breakdown cover. Many policies, and most credit card travel packages, include a lockout service you have already paid for.
- If it is a hire car, call the rental company first. Their agreement usually requires it, and their assistance is normally included.
What not to try
The coat hanger through the window seal is the classic, and it belongs in 1985. Modern doors have wiring looms, side airbag sensors and delicate weather seals sitting exactly where the hanger goes. The repair costs many times what the opening would have.
Slim jims, wedges forced too far, and “just a bit of pressure” on the top of the door frame all end the same way: a bent frame, a leaking seal, or a window mechanism that never quite works again.
How a locksmith opens it
With an air wedge, which creates a controlled few millimetres of gap at the top corner of the door, and a long-reach tool passed through that gap to operate the interior handle or the lock button. The paint and the seal are protected while the tool is in place.
On most vehicles it is a matter of minutes and leaves no trace. On some it is not possible without risk, and you should be told that at the kerb rather than after twenty minutes of trying.
Expect to prove the vehicle is yours: the registration document, the rental agreement, or identification matching paperwork visible inside. Any locksmith who does not ask is one you should not be calling.
The thing a locksmith cannot do
If your key is genuinely lost, damaged or will not start the car, opening the door does not solve your problem. Cutting, supplying and programming car keys is specialist work done by main dealers and auto key specialists, with the vehicle’s security data and the right equipment.
It is worth saying that plainly on the phone. A locksmith who opens your door when what you actually needed was a key has charged you for half a solution.
Afterwards
The habit that prevents the repeat is boring and it works: keys in a pocket, not in a hand, before anything goes into the boot. The second most common version of this call in Altea is the boot lid closing on a set of keys that were resting on the parcel shelf.
For a hire car in particular, there is an order to the phone calls that saves both money and argument.
